Lahore Plans to Deploy 400 Electric Buses to Fight Smog.
In a significant move to combat Lahore’s persistent smog issue, the Punjab government has announced the launch of 400 electric buses as part of an environmental initiative to enhance air quality and reduce pollution in the city. Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb unveiled this plan during a press conference focused on climate change and anti-smog measures.
The electric buses are poised to address air pollution caused by traditional vehicles, a major contributor to Lahore’s smog problem. This initiative forms part of a 10-year anti-smog strategy introduced by the Punjab government, which combines technological innovations and policy reforms to tackle the environmental crisis. Alongside lowering emissions, the project aims to shift public transportation towards sustainable and eco-friendly solutions.
The rollout will begin with 27 electric buses arriving in Lahore by January 2025, with the full fleet of 400 electric buses set to operate citywide in the coming months. Additionally, the initiative includes plans to transition 5.2 million motorbikes in Lahore to electric models, further contributing to cleaner air and greener transportation.
This shift to electric buses is a cornerstone of the government’s broader efforts to reduce smog, which intensifies during winter months. Other measures include shutting down high-emission factories, regulating brick kilns, and encouraging sustainable farming practices.
By introducing these buses, Lahore is expected to witness a notable improvement in air quality. The initiative aligns with the government’s target to cut smog levels by 38% compared to last year, marking a key step towards a cleaner, healthier future for the city.
