“I have imposed a ban on carrying weapons, aerial firing, and the use of firecrackers for two days,” announced Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi.

KARACHI: Section 144 has been enforced across Karachi for December 31, 2024, and January 1, 2025, prohibiting aerial firing, firecrackers, and carrying firearms on New Year’s Eve.

Commissioner Naqvi stated that the ban, implemented under the authority granted by the Sindh Home Department, aims to ensure public safety during New Year celebrations.

“Carrying or displaying weapons, aerial firing, and using firecrackers are completely banned within Karachi Division from December 31, 2024, to January 1, 2025,” he added.

Every year, several people are injured or even lose their lives due to celebratory firing, despite previous efforts by the authorities to prevent such incidents.

Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) grants the district administration the power to impose bans on activities for a limited period, with police responsible for enforcement and filing cases against violators.

The ban was requested by the deputy inspector general (DIG) of police, South Zone, who pointed out that large groups of youngsters often gather at Seaview in cars and on motorcycles to celebrate, causing traffic jams and inconvenience for residents.

The DIG also highlighted that some individuals engage in aerial firing, risking serious accidents or even fatalities. To protect citizens’ lives, the ban was deemed necessary.

In addition, the Sindh Police have issued warnings against aerial firing and finalized a security plan to ensure the safety of Karachi residents during New Year celebrations. Strict action will be taken against anyone violating the ban.
