PTA Connecting Pakistan to World’s Largest Submarine Cable.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is working on connecting Pakistan’s internet system to the 2Africa Cable, a massive 45,000 km undersea cable project. This is the largest cable project in the world.
Improved Internet Speeds Expected
According to sources, the physical integration with the 2Africa Cable is in progress. This project, led by Meta (Facebook), will significantly boost internet speeds in Pakistan. The cable will connect 45,000 km of infrastructure and is expected to go live in the country by 2025, offering users some of the fastest internet speeds globally.
About the 2Africa Cable
The 2Africa Cable connects 46 landing stations across Europe, Africa, and Asia. It will bring advanced internet services to Pakistan once it becomes operational in 2025.
PTA’s Progress So Far
PTA has made significant progress through Transworld Associates (TWA), the landing partner of the 2Africa Cable in Pakistan. The project uses advanced SDM1 technology, with a massive 180Tbps capacity, supported by a consortium of eight global partners, including Meta and Vodafone.
Cable Landing in Karachi
The first phase of the project, known as Pre-Lay Shore End (PLSE) installation, began on December 1, 2024, at Hawksbay, Karachi. The second phase, involving deep-sea cable laying, will start on April 1, 2025.
Benefits for Pakistan
This project will greatly improve Pakistan’s international telecommunications infrastructure, enhancing connectivity and providing faster, more reliable internet services.
